Comments from
Professional Woodturners who have taken the class.
"Stuart
Batty is the best that I have seen at teaching the fundamentals
of woodturning. After 15 years or so, as a professional woodturner,
I thought I knew how to turn. In his class I actually learned
how to cut the wood, and how to understand what was happening
and why. I continue to attend Stuart's Techniques class to keep
myself tuned up." - Cindy Drozda
"I am
a full-time professional woodturner and highly recommend Stuart's
teaching methods. I have personally taken his classes. Stuart's
ability to analyze and verbalize problem areas in my technique
has been beneficial to my continued interest in becoming a better
turner." - David Nittmann
The two-day
classes focused on woodturning technique. The three day class
is a making projects class in which the techniques learned in
the two-day class will be reinforced by turning six projects.
Class descriptions follow.
Two-Day Techniques Class Description:
This class
has been developed over 26 years of teaching experience and is
for every level of woodturner from beginner to professional. The
techniques are not self-taught. They have been developed over
the centuries, and have been modified to suit modern tools and
machinery.
The emphasis
of this class will be on technique, on learning the correct way
to sharpen tools and to cut wood. Both spindle turning and bowl
turning techniques will be covered in detail. The class will also
include discussions about wood grain orientation, and how understanding
the grain orientation influences choice of tools and cutting technique.
Techniques will be reinforced by practicing each technique repeatedly
over the two-day class. Each student will turn approximately 16
pieces. Stuart has taught this class to approximately 2000 students.
Three-Day Making Projects Class Description:
Students for
this class must, at some time, have taken Stuart's two-day techniques
class. This class will apply the techniques learned in the two-day
class to turning projects, including the following:
Thin Walled
Bowl
Calabash
Bowl
Long Stem
Goblet
Box Making
Spheres and
Jam chucking
Square Bowls
Emphasis will
be placed on the use of proper technique throughout, including
the proper sharpening of tools, and proper cutting techniques
for the type of wood being cut, and the grain orientation. This
class will also include a discussion of scraping techniques, both
with regular scrapers and negative-rake scrapers.
